Notes:
John Rutter brings his own special brand of musical magic to bear in a concert that features some of the world's best-loved choral and orchestral works. Alongside the intense emotion of Barber's celebrated Adagio for Strings, and the poignant lyricism of Vaughan Williams' ethereal The Lark Ascending, is Tavener's elegiac setting of Binyon's familiar poem 'They shall not grow old', whose distant echo choir is utterly spine-tingling in live performance.

The concert also includes Rutter's own Requiem, by far the most popular (to date) of his large-scale pieces. Composed in 1985 in memory of his father, the music is, in Rutter's words, 'intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately moving towards light rather than darkness.'
